ONE WEEK GAME MAKING CHALLENGE!
I was the art lead for this project.
Here's all the concept art and original characters, environment
and UI designs I made during a game jam challenge
for our team's town simulator game,"Scale and Scepter".
The challenge was 1 week long.
(The game is now in further development.)
THE RESEARCH

I started by gathering reference, doing some coral reef research and making a moodboard for the visual of the world we had decided on (a fantasy medieval town, but with fish citizens).
I had a good idea for a style I wanted to go with (inspired by such games as "The Wind Waker", "Night in the Woods" and "Cult of Lamb") for the characters. I was also looking for less-common creatures to populate the kingdom, as the oceans always fascinated me with their diversity!

I wanted the backgrounds to be fun and colourful, like a real-life coral reef (where our game would be taking place).
The game would start with the reef almost dead and unpopulated, but as the player made progress populating the map, adding more buildings, the reef would become more alive again.
It also speaks to the real-world issue of coral reefs suffering because of human influence.
A happy reef is a colourful reef, filled with all sorts of fish!

THE CHARACTERS
Having to work fast, I went with a simplified approach to most of the character sprites.
It fit the unserious tone of the game!

THE THRONE ROOM
I wanted the throne room to feel tranquil and royal in an other-wordly way, but it still needed to be welcoming, since the player would be spending a big portion of time
in here talking to all the characters.
Plus, the beauty of the room would provide fun contrast
to our Blobking's miserable design!
THE UI
The UI is still a work-in-progress as of today, but I focused on staying true to the game's mood and the functionality.
